In our 7 years at South Grand Prairie High School we have taken huge steps towards our ultimate goal to win a State Championship. Our coaches and student athletes have worked extremely hard to make the South Grand Prairie Basketball program one of the best in the State of Texas. SGP has had a winning record every year that Coach Bennett has been head coach, and have won 20 plus games in 4 out of 6 seasons. Under Coach Bennett’s leadership the Warriors have 149 wins and 53 losses. The Warriors were District Champions and Regional Finalist for the 2011-2012 season. They were Region 1 Champions and State Finalist for the 2012-2013 season. In those 2 seasons the warriors had 72 wins and 7 losses. Coach Bennett was voted the District 5-5A Coach of the Year and Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year for the 2011-2012 season. Coach Bennett and his staff currently have 13 student athletes playing college basketball, and have 2 players on the 2015-2016 team that have committed to play division one basketball at major universities.
Coach Thomas has been coaching in Texas for over 13 years. In that time he has coached basketball as a Varsity Assistant and Head Coach at Fort Worth Brewer, South Hills and Mansfield Summit. Coach Thomas graduated from Dunbar High School in 2002, where he help lead his basketball team to the state championship finals. After high school, Coach Thomas attended The University of Texas at Arlington where he finished his career as the number 2 scorer and rebounder. Coach Thomas graduated from UTA in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and minor in English. After college, Coach Thomas played professional basketball in Iceland, Germany and Mexico. Coach Thomas has been married to his wife, Satia for 7 years. Coach Thomas and his wife has 3 children: Jayden 14, and twins Kyri and Yani Thomas 3. Coach Thomas enjoys spending time with his family, playing spades and visiting his grandmother, Mildred Sanders.
Junior Varsity Head Coach
Coach Chumley I have been coaching in Texas for 5 seasons. In that time I have been a head Coach at Kerens 1 season where we won a District Championship and finished season ranked #15 in the state by TABC Hoops. Previously I served as Head Coach at Ferris High School for 2 seasons where we turned a 5 win program into 23 wins in 2nd season. Winning first tournament and most wins in a season in a decade. Coach Chumley graduated from Sabine High School in Kilgore, Texas. After High School, Coach Chumley attended Dallas Christian College where he was a part of the 2013 National Championship. In 2015 he was an Academic All America. In 2015 Coach Chumley graded from DCC with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History and minor in Bible. Coach Chumley got recently engaged to his fiancé Latalia and plans to have his wedding in summer 2021. During free time Coach Chumley enjoys watching crime shows and spending time with his family and friends in East Texas and DFW area.
Freshman A Head Coach
Coach Meyers graduated from Texas Christian University in May 2017 with a Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology, studying Physical Education- Strength & Conditioning. During his time at TCU, he played on the TCU Basketball Practice Team all four years, where he was able to learn from some of the best coaches in the nation. This will be Coach’s 5th year coaching the Freshman Warriors. Coach Meyers just recently married to his wife, Amy. Coach Meyers is excited to be on staff here at SGP, and feels blessed to be able to coach this great group of young men, with the support of his wife. Coach Meyers hopes to help mold his student athletes into future varsity and collegiate athletes, and young men of character.
Freshman B Head Coach
Coach Butler graduated from Mansfield Summit in 2011 where he played the wing position. He attended McMurry University where he played his first year and half there, then he went on and transferred to North Texas University to get his Degree in Biology. Coach Butler has 7 years of coaching experience with AAU programs and as an assistant at Mansfield Summit. He is very excited about joining the staff at South Grand Prairie, and looks forward to working with Coach Bennett. Coach Butler loves to watch and talk sports; he also loves to spend time with his family.
